VACANCY NOTICE

TITLE:                                   Translator–Interpreter

WORKING HOURS:               Full time

LOCATION:                            Kyiv, Ukraine

The NATO Liaison Office in Ukraine (NLO) was established in 1999 to facilitate political and military co-operation between the Alliance and Ukraine. In recognition of the growing importance of the NATO-Ukraine partnership the NATO Representation to Ukraine (NRU) was established in March 2016. The NRU is composed of the NLO and the NATO Information and Documentation Centre (NIDC), and is headed by the Director of the NLO (D/NLO).

The Translator–Interpreter provides translation and interpretation support for the NATO Liaison Office (NLO). He/she supports the work of the Front Office, co-ordinating with Deputy Directors (DD/NLO) and other Front Office staff as appropriate.

The Translator-Interpreter reports to D/NLO through the DD/NLO.

 1.     TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Translate outgoing English-language documents prepared by NLO staff into Ukrainian; translate incoming Ukrainian-language letters and other relevant documents into English;
  • Translate meeting agendas, speaking points, lectures, speeches as necessary; proofread, edit and revise translated materials;
  • Support the NLO in organizing meetings/conferences (translating programmes, invitation letters, participant lists; prepare conference folders, table signs and badges; etc.);
  • Provide simultaneous and/or consecutive interpretation (from and into both Ukrainian and English) at meetings/conferences/media engagements as required;
  • Support liaison and co-ordination efforts with additional interpreters/translators hired on a freelance basis for NLO-supported events and/or pursuant to agreement between NRU and international partners;
  • Organize workload ensuring adequate time management and prioritization;
  • Liaise as necessary with other NRU staff;
  • When time allows and upon agreement of D/NLO, support NLO programmatic and advisory teams with translation/interpretation; 
  • Keep abreast of new relevant professional terminology; update and expand NLO’s “NATO terminology list” (in English and Ukrainian) to facilitate interpretation/translation efforts;
  • Perform other duties as required.

The Translator-Interpreter may be expected to support or stand in for other members of the Front Office team during absences or busy periods and to work on other tasks as requested by D/NLO and/or DD/NLO.

 2.     QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

Essential qualifications and skills:

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline from a university of recognised standing; post-graduate qualification in linguistics, translation or interpretation would be a distinct advantage.
  • Full professional fluency (both written and spoken) in English, Ukrainian and Russian, including ability to draft reports/correspondence and deliver briefings/presentations.
  • Ability to instantly comprehend and convert one language to another, rendering spoken messages accurately, quickly and clearly, relaying the style and tone of the original language;
  • Good understanding of spoken and colloquial language;
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant work experience, experience in an international environment (international organization, NGO or embassy) is an advantage.
  • Good political and current affairs awareness;
  • Good knowledge of NATO and NATO-Ukraine partnership issues and terminology;
  • Basic knowledge of diplomatic protocol;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Time management, ability to work under pressure;
  • Be highly motivated and pro-active, as well as work effectively as a team member; and
  • Share work values like responsibility, honesty, integrity, confidentiality.

Desirable qualifications and skills:

  • Proficiency in other languages, particularly French, would be an advantage; and
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

Applicants should possess Ukrainian citizenship/valid work permit.

 3.     CONTRACT AND REMUNERATION PACKAGE

The successful candidate will be offered a locally engaged staff contract for an initial duration of 1 year (renewable) after successful completion of a three-month probationary period.

An attractive package will be offered to the successful candidate, including a.competitive salary, generous health, accident and social insurance, and 30 days of paid leave per year in addition to public holidays.

The successful candidate will receive a contract following a background/security check.
