People in Need (PIN) is the Czech Republic based NGO working in relief and development sectors. In early August 2014 PIN opened humanitarian response in Eastern Ukraine and the program is rapidly expanding. Focus is given on the assistance to the IDPs, returnees and population living in the contested areas in the sectors of food security, WASH, Shelter and NFIs, Livelihoods, protection. PIN is currently looking for experienced and inspired Communication Officer.

The Communication Officer is responsible for leading PIN Ukraine’s internal and external communication and visibility activities, is line-managed by the Country Director. S/he communicates regularly and coordinates activities with the media department at PIN headquarters in Prague, Czech Republic.

Start-up date:  August/September2016

Location: Slavyansk with  business trips within Ukraine

Overview of Main Tasks

• Develops and Implements PIN Ukraine’s Communication Strategy and Action Plan in Ukraine, including internal and external aspects
• Conducts media activities:  collects beneficiary/success stories directly in the field, takes photos and writes accompanying captions; makes short videos covering PIN Ukraine activities (preparing questions for colleagues, taking photos, organizing photo according to agreed structure, preparing best of photos collections); writes press releases, maintaining journalists contact list
• Monitors PIN’s media presence, consults Country Director and responds as advised
• Prepares the flyer/leaflet and presentations about PIN Ukraine and each programme, quarterly internal newsletter
• Prepares visibility materials (posters, leaflets) for all projects and ensures Program teams are aware and using these
• Acts as a focal point for International journalists interested in PIN and coming to the mission (including logistical issues like travel permits etc.)
• Ensures regular communication with PIN’s Communication Officers in HQ (delivering stories, articles, photos and videos etc.)
• Supports organisation of any public events that may be needed
• Supports the Country Director in advocacy activities when needed. Contributes information products (stories, photos) to advocacy efforts run by PIN Ukraine or PIN HQ.
• Together with the management of the mission enforces observing of Special Communication Rules for PIN Ukraine mission.

Skills and Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in communications, PR, journalism, international relations, social studies or another relevant field;
• 2+ years of relevant experience in one or more of the following areas: public relations, communications, journalism, advocacy or related area
• Ability to design and plan media and communication activities and ensure timely implementation
• Demonstrated ability to write stories and reports, take photos, videos and communicate orally with accuracy and professionalism
• Good knowledge of social media tools
• Graphic design skills
• Native Ukrainian and Russian, upper-intermediate or advanced English language
• Strong communication and organizational skills
• Well organized, pro-active and reliable, creative and independent problem solution approach
• A willingness to travel within Ukraine
