BACKGROUND: The eight-year USAID Democratic Governance East (DG East) Activity aims to strengthen the connection and trust between citizens and their government in eastern and southern Ukraine by promoting an inclusive civic identity and common civic values and addressing the divisive impacts and the consequences of the ongoing full-scale invasion of Ukraine. DG East works to (1) develop greater acceptance of a shared civic culture based on common values and understandings, and to (2) increase participation to improve Ukraine’s governance and reform processes and help to resolve community problems. DG East activities are implemented across four regional portfolios and an office in Kyiv.
JOB SUMMARY: The Communications Specialist will support DG East’s reporting, communications, and outreach. This will include managing social media accounts, drafting success stories and other outreach materials in English and Ukrainian, ensuring communications materials produced by DG East partners adhere to USAID branding guidelines, aligning communications around messages developed in consultation with DG East stakeholders, coordinating with media vendors on communications deliverables and documentation, drafting inputs for project reporting, assisting with organizing and managing events, and editing Ukrainian text for reports, social media, and publications. The Communications Specialist will maintain DG East’s content and quality standards for all project materials and outreach to ensure that products reinforce USAID/Ukraine’s’ strategic objectives as related to DG East activities and impact.
REPORTING: This position reports to the Communications Director.
Project Communications and Content Development
• Develop and maintain familiarity and proficiency in all DG East activities.
• Develop content for the following:
1. Project reporting (e.g., weekly and quarterly reporting, impact reporting, and other deliverables)
2. Public outreach materials for DG East and its partners (e.g., articles, success stories, press announcements)
• Assist project staff in developing communications campaigns for DG East activities in close collaboration with the Communications Director.
• Prepare approval requests for USAID related to communications and branding requirements.
• Respond to inquiries and requests from DG East’s grantees and vendors related to USAID branding guidelines, documentation, and other requirements.
• Provide feedback to DG East grantees and vendors on communications deliverables (e.g., videos, social media content, articles)
• In consultation with project staff, create project materials and templates as needed (e.g., project fact sheets, PowerPoint presentations, brochures) to ensure that all project materials adhere to USAID reporting and branding requirements and guidelines.
• Collect, organize, and verify data for infographics and other reporting deliverables.
• Assist with organizing and managing external events in coordination with project staff, including agendas, invitations, and logistics.
• Photograph events and activities for publication as needed.
Social Media Outreach
• Create and manage content on social media platforms, such as Facebook and LinkedIn, to cultivate and expand audience, ensuring user engagement through the day-to-day management of social media platforms.
• Ensure that current social media messaging aligns with DG East goals, objectives, and USAID requirements and considerations.
• Stay informed about current social media trends, insights from content, and the latest social media best practices and technologies.
• Monitor the social media accounts of DG East’s partners and key stakeholders to generate ideas for content creation and engagement opportunities.
• Perform any other duties as assigned by the Communications Director.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: N/A
DUTY STATION: Kyiv, Ukraine.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to travel throughout Ukraine when requested.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• University degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, or another relevant field.
• Minimum of 4 years of experience in communications and outreach, preferably working with international donor-funded projects.
• Proven track record of managing social media accounts on platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram.
• Demonstrated ability to create engaging content for digital publication.
• Experience in producing high-quality documentation, compiling reports, and tailoring formats to target audiences.
• Additional skills in graphic design, photography, and video production skills are advantageous.
• Professional proficiency in spoken and written English is necessary.
• Fluency in Ukrainian is mandatory.
